Why should we care about our privacy?

Most people when it comes to privacy just try not to think about it too much. I was the same way until i actually looked into what information about us and our personal lives are being gathered. You may have nothing to hide, but that does not mean all your information should be spread across the internet. Something people don't realize is that their information is actually worth a monetary value. Most businesses use this data that is collected to help marketing and campaigning. So why should we just give it to them? There are two main gatherers when it comes to information. The first is the government and the second is businesses. Some people are probably still thinking, why should i care? But the thing is the government and businesses use this information to snoop on peoples personal lives without permission. Unlike businesses, the government is subjected to the Privacy Act of 1974 which requires that agencies give the public notice of their systems of records by publication in the Federal Register. With businesses it is a lot more scary because they are not legally bounded to release what information has been collected or even what they are doing with it. Personally i am very concerned with where are privacy is dissolving to and hope that changes are made to protect law abiding citizens from this sort of stuff.

  1. I like how you worded all the issues with privacy. Yes we don't all have something to hide, but that doesn't mean our information should just be out there for all these people, and corporations, and law enforcement agencies to just have access to. Especially if something we did in 2006 was not illegal but in 2018 it is and then they try to hold it against us. I think that is the one thing that scares me the most.
